The Guy Wilkins Band

Best Job on Earth

This past Wednesday, I played a solo gig at the Backstage Lounge on Granville Island. Its nights like these that keep me going. People getting together to listen to music, sing along, play music and chat with friends.

First up behind the grand, with and an equally prevalent voice and looks, the fabulous Jessica Beach. She owns the stage and draws us all in. Her band's music invited me in and played me like a fiddle. She keeps the audience hanging from her every word, with her sultry voice and clever lyrics.

I jumped up on the stage after, got comfy and proceeded to play my set, four songs in whilst playing "the streets" I broke a string, Damn! Nick Jumped on stage saved me and wowed the crowd with a few of his songs, whilst I changed them. Then we played an interesting version of "Space Monkeys" together followed by "Radio-active Suntan". We finished with Small, which is a fun song to play. Before we could leave the stage, we had encore's from the Bar and from the host Mike Weterings. We obliged of course and played, after a little tuning, "Ned". And before we could leave the Stage a second time, we had encore's from the Bar. Of course we obliged and jammed a blues esque song, complete with cello solo and Grand Finale. We were all connected, moments I live for.

Then Rebecca Ramone jumped on the stage, first thing I noticed was her unique and incredible looks. She has the voice of an angel, if you get the chance go and see her, she comes highly recommended.

Then the man who everybody knows Don Alder jumped on stage. I think his website says it best , Vancouvers best kept secret. Playing his own signature model guitar. A beautifull instrument, a work of art. Ive heard Don Alder is actually two people. Its the only way to explain what we saw....

Then the nights host Mike Weterings jumped up and played his songs. A mix of World experiences, his music is infused with African and South American Melody. Made me think of South Africa, of dancing bare feet under an African sky. Brings me back to the memories I thought were long forgotten. Thank you again Mike, I'm going to have to buy your music...

Good night all...
